Histology

The Royal Stoke Hospital Histology Department is situated on the second floor of the University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust main building.

The Royal Stoke Mortuary is situated on the lower ground floor of the University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust main building.

The County Body Store is located at County Hospital.

These three departments are all part of the Pathology Directorate which in turn is part of the Children’s, Women’s and Diagnostics division.

All visitors to the department must report to the relevant reception desk and sign in and out of the building. 

The department is ISO 15189:2012 accredited and processes over 40,000 Histology requests each year from which we produce over 285,000 slides for microscopic examination. We receive over 5500 Non Gynaecological specimens each year from which we produce over 9000 slides for microscopical examination.

UHNM Histology Department provides a comprehensive service to hospitals and surrounding GP surgeries in Staffordshire and Shropshire .

Point of Care Testing

Point of Care Testing (POCT) can be defined as any analytical test performed for a patient by a healthcare professional outside the conventional laboratory setting. 

Phlebotomy

The Trust provides phlebotomy (blood test) services at Royal Stoke, County Hospital and at a number of walk-in and bookable clinics in the community setting. 

The samples are then transported to the Pathology Laboratory for testing.

The Phlebotomy section contains information for patients regarding the blood test process, and the times and locations of the phlebotomy clinics provided by the Trust.

Cytology

Cytology is situated within the Pathology department at the Royal Stoke University Hospital in the Main Building on Floor 2. It is part of the Pathology Directorate which in turn is part of the Children’s, Women’s and Diagnostics division.

The department is ISO 15189:2012 accredited and processes approximately 95,000 cervical cytology samples per annum for the NHS Cervical Screening Programme, providing a comprehensive service to hospitals and surrounding GP surgeries in Staffordshire, Shropshire and East & Mid Cheshire.

An FNA adequacy service is also provided at dedicated Head & Neck clinics three times per week at UHNM.

Anticoagulation Management

Staffordshire Thrombosis and Anticoagulation Centre (STAC) provides oral anticoagulation management for approximately 8,500 patients across Stoke-on-Trent, North Staffordshire and Stafford and Surrounds.

Microbiology, Virology and Molecular Microbiology Services

The Microbiology Department comprising Bacteriology, Parasitology, Virology and Molecular Microbiology Services Department is situated within the Main Building of The Royal Stoke University Hospital (RSUH). The Department of Microbiology is a large modern laboratory that processes approximately 750,000 specimens per year. It is part of the Pathology Directorate which in turn is part of the Children’s & Women’s Diagnostic Services Division of the hospital.

Blood Transfusion

The Blood Transfusion Department performs transfusion-related testing and provides a range of blood products for the Royal Stoke University hospital (RSUH) and County Hospital (CH).

Biochemistry

Clinical Biochemistry is involved in diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease through analysis of bodily fluids such as blood, urine and CSF. The results of biochemical tests are vital in selecting the most appropriate management pathways, and providing the best possible care for patients.

Haematology

The Department provides a comprehensive, UKAS accredited (ISO 15189) Haematology service for the University Hospitals of North Midlands, surrounding GPs and peripheral hospitals.

Immunology

The  Clinical Immunology Laboratory is on the Royal Stoke University Hospital site of the  University Hospital of North Midlands (UHNM) and provides specialist  services for allergy, autoimmunity and immunodeficiency,
