The Trust provides phlebotomy (blood test) services at Royal Stoke (RSUH), County Hospital (CH) and at a number of bookable clinics in the community setting. The samples are then transported to Pathology at either RSUH or CH for testing.
The Phlebotomy section contains information for patients regarding the blood test process, and the times and locations of the phlebotomy clinics provided by the Trust.
The UHNM Phlebotomy Service has UKAS accreditation (ISO15189).

Blood Transfusion
Accreditation No: 8802
The Department provides a comprehensive, UKAS accredited (ISO 15189) Blood Transfusion service for the Royal Stoke University hospital (RSUH), County Hospital (CH), Haywood Hospital and two local hospices (Douglas Macmillan in Stoke-on-Trent, and Katharine House in Stafford).
This includes the performance of Blood Transfusion related testing, and the provision of a range of blood products where appropriate.

Point of Care Testing
Point of Care Testing (POCT) can be defined as any analytical test performed for a patient by a healthcare professional outside the conventional laboratory setting.
Anticoagulation Management
Staffordshire Thrombosis and Anticoagulation Centre (STAC) provides oral anticoagulation management for approximately 8,500 patients across Stoke-on-Trent, North Staffordshire and Stafford and Surrounds.
Haematology

The Department provides a comprehensive Haematology service for the University Hospitals of North Midlands, surrounding GPs and peripheral hospitals as part of the North Midlands and Cheshire Pathology Service (NMCPS).

Histology
The Pathology Department is part of the recently formed network North Midlands and Cheshire Pathology Services (NMCPS), combining Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT), East Cheshire NHS Trust (ECT), and University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM). On 1st April 2021 UHNM became the legal entity responsible for the provision of Pathology Services within MCHFT and to ECT and any other organisations for which they have an agreement for the delivery of Pathology Services. This website covers the Cellular Pathology services provided to all users across the NMCPS service.
The Royal Stoke Hospital Histology Department is situated on the second floor of the UHNM main building.
The Royal Stoke Mortuary is situated on the lower ground floor of the UHNM main building.
The County Body Store is located at County Hospital, Stafford.
The Leighton Hospital Mortuary is based at MCHFT, Crewe.
The East Cheshire Hospital Mortuary is based at ECT, Macclesfield.
These services sit within the NMCPS Pathology Division.
All visitors to these departments must report to the relevant reception desk and sign in and out of the building.
The NMCPS Histology department processes over 80,000 Histology requests each year from which we produce over 500,000 slides for microscopic examination. We receive over 7500 Non Gynaecological specimens each year from which we produce over 12,000 slides for microscopical examination.
The NMCPS Histology Department provides a comprehensive service to all hospitals and surrounding GP surgeries and clinics in Staffordshire, Shropshire and Cheshire.
The department is a UKAS accredited medical Laboratory number 8823. The scope is as defined on the UKAS website
Department of infection Sciences
The Department of Infection Sciences, incorporating Bacteriology, Serology and Molecular Biology, is situated within the Main Building of The Royal Stoke University Hospital (RSUH). The Department is a large modern laboratory that processes approximately 1.5 million tests per year. It is part of the Pathology Directorate and North Midlands and Cheshire Pathology Service (NMCPS) Division of the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, providing the infection diagnostic service for the North Midlands and Cheshire Pathology Service partnership.
Immunology
The Clinical Immunology Laboratory is on the Royal Stoke University Hospital site of the University Hospital of North Midlands (UHNM) and provides specialist services for allergy, autoimmunity and immunodeficiency,
Biochemistry
Clinical Biochemistry is involved in diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease through analysis of bodily fluids such as blood, urine and CSF. The results of biochemical tests are vital in selecting the most appropriate management pathways, and providing the best possible care for patients.
