The Royal Stoke Hospital Histology Department is situated on the second floor of the University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust main building.
The Royal Stoke Mortuary is situated on the lower ground floor of the University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust main building. The County Body Store is located at County Hospital.
These three departments are all part of the Pathology Directorate which in turn is part of the Children’s, Women’s and Diagnostics division.
All visitors to the department must report to the relevant reception desk and sign in and out of the building.
The department is accredited to the scope as defined on the UKAS website and our laboratory number is 8823.
The department processes over 40,000 Histology requests each year from which we produce over 285,000 slides for microscopic examination. We receive over 5500 Non Gynaecological specimens each year from which we produce over 9000 slides for microscopical examination.
UHNM Histology Department provides a comprehensive service to hospitals and surrounding GP surgeries in Staffordshire and Shropshire .
The Trust provides phlebotomy (blood test) services at Royal Stoke, County Hospital and at a number of walk-in and bookable clinics in the community setting.
The samples are then transported to the Pathology Laboratory for testing.
The Phlebotomy section contains information for patients regarding the blood test process, and the times and locations of the phlebotomy clinics provided by the Trust.
Cytology at UHNM has now closed. Cervical specimens taken in Cheshire should now be sent to Manchester - for queries please call 0161 701 0228. Cervical specimens taken in Shropshire and Staffordshire should now be sent to Wolverhampton - for queries please call 01902 307999. FNA clinics are still operating but are now under the management of Histology at Royal Stoke - please see their section of this website.

Staffordshire Thrombosis and Anticoagulation Centre (STAC) provides oral anticoagulation management for approximately 8,500 patients across Stoke-on-Trent, North Staffordshire and Stafford and Surrounds.
The Microbiology Department comprising Bacteriology, Parasitology, Virology and Molecular Microbiology Services Department is situated within the Main Building of The Royal Stoke University Hospital (RSUH). The Department of Microbiology is a large modern laboratory that processes approximately 750,000 specimens per year. It is part of the Pathology Directorate which in turn is part of the Children’s & Women’s Diagnostic Services Division of the hospital.
Clinical Biochemistry is involved in diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease through analysis of bodily fluids such as blood, urine and CSF. The results of biochemical tests are vital in selecting the most appropriate management pathways, and providing the best possible care for patients.
The Clinical Immunology Laboratory is on the Royal Stoke University Hospital site of the University Hospital of North Midlands (UHNM) and provides specialist services for allergy, autoimmunity and immunodeficiency,
