The Trust provides phlebotomy (blood test) services at Royal Stoke (RSUH), County Hospital (CH) and at a number of walk-in and bookable clinics in the community setting. The samples are then transported to Pathology at either RSUH or CH for testing.

The Phlebotomy section contains information for patients regarding the blood test process, and the times and locations of the phlebotomy clinics provided by the Trust.

The UHNM Phlebotomy Service has UKAS accreditation (ISO15189).

The accreditation number for the Department is 8802.

Our accreditation is limited to those activities described on our UKAS schedule of accreditation

The Phlebotomist will call you into a room and ask you to sit in a chair and uncover your arm (short or loose sleeved garments are best suited to the process).  After confirming your identity, blood is taken from your vein and put into a special blood bottle.  Sometimes more than one blood bottle is filled depending on the type of blood test requested by your doctor, however, usually only one venepuncture is needed to collect sufficient blood for the tests.

Royal Stoke University Hospital

GP Patients

The Royal Stoke University Hospital does not have a facility for routine blood tests for GP patients within the Hospital complex.  This can be done at a range of convenient locations within the community either by making an appointment at a bookable clinic or at walk-in centres where no appointment is required (see below under Community Services).  All locations have free parking.

Children's Blood Tests

Paediatric phlebotomy should be accessed by making an appointment at the Paediatric Clinic at the Royal Stoke site. Please contact 01782 675183 for an appointment.  This service is mainly for children below the age of 10.

There is a small phlebotomy suite in the main hospital situated within Medical Outpatients specifically for patients requiring blood tests when they attend for clinic appointments.  This service is for hospital blood test requests only.  It is not available for patients given a blood test request card by their GP unless by prior arrangement.

Hospital patients can also access the community service detailed below if it is more convenient for them to do so.

County Hospital

You do not need an appointment to attend the phlebotomy (blood test) department, as it is an open access service.  You will need to bring your blood test request form from your doctor.

The Phlebotomy rooms are located in the in the Green Area of the Outpatients Department.  When you arrive for your blood test please take a number from the ticket dispenser situated outside of the phlebotomy room, take a seat and wait until your number is displayed.
