Glucose (CSF)

Background:

CSF glucose is normally 60 - 80 % of plasma glucose concentration.

Decreased concentration are noted in bacterial, tuberculous and some fungal meningitides; and in hypoxia. CSF glucose concentrations < 1.0 mmol/L are strongly predictive of bacterial meningitis.

Abnormal ratios may also be observed in severe hyperglycaemia, and following administration of hypoglycaemic agents.

CSF-to-serum glucose ratios have limited utility in neonates and in patients with severe hyperglycaemia.
