Lipid profile
Background:
Lipid profiles are commonly requested as part of a cardiovascular health check, if cardiovascular disease is suspected, in cases where abnormal lipids may cause other conditions, or in patients taking lipid-modifying drugs.
A standard lipid profile includes the following tests:
- Cholesterol
- HDL-cholesterol
- Total cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratio
- Non-HDL cholesterol
- Triglycerides (fasting only)
- LDL-cholesterol (fasting only)
A fasting lipid profile requires the patient to consume nothing but water for 12 hours prior to venepuncture.
Samples will not be analysed if previous analysis performed within 4 weeks. If there is a specific clinical reason for analysis within this timeframe, please state this on the request card.
