Background:
Monitoring sodium valproate concentrations are only useful to assess compliance.
Toxic effects do not show a clear relationship to serum concentrations.
Reference range:
Sample should be taken at trough level.
Valproate "target range" 50-100 mg/L, but poorly defined. Value does not meaningfully relate level to clinical effect.
