Alkaline phosphatase

Background:

Part of liver function test profile/bone profile

Age-specific reference ranges will be stated on each individual report.

ALP concentration is commonly increased during growth, healing fractures, or during pregnancy (placental origin). Unexplained elevation of ALP is suggestive of bone or liver disease. Co-existing elevation of GGT indicates hepatic source of ALP.

Reference ranges:

Age range Reference range (U/L)
< 30 days 70 - 380
< 16 years 60 - 425
> 16 years (adults) 30 - 130

Derived from Pathology Harmony 2011

Results outside the reference range do not necessarily indicate disease. Similarly, results within the reference range do not preclude abnormality. Please contact the Duty Biochemist for discussion of individual patient results
